I cannot stand it when people just ignore facts so that something suits their own purposes better. I'm not sure if it was done with intent here or just a lack of proper research, but it's happened all the same. Through various mailing lists that I'm on I've received word about (what seems to be) a shocking story in Iran. Two boys, aged 16 and 18 have been executed for being gay. They were given 228 lashes before they were executed. Seems like an atrocity, right? Well it would be, if it were true. However, despite this version of events being spread around far and wide, a few minutes with Google News quickly reveals that in fact they were executed for abducting and raping a 13-yr old boy at knife point. While I'm okay with people saying that they oppose the execution of minors or execution in general, I'm pretty angry that people are spreading around that they were executed for no good reason. Although it may seem harsh to say this, rape of a child occurs to me as one of the better reasons to execute someone. Having said that, I don't support execution in general, but rapists are routinely executed in Iran so it doesn't even occur to me as being especially news-worthy.
